After months of planning and uncertainties, we finally departed for our 26 hour trip to India. For me however my “trip” started a bit early. To make a long story short, read the side effects of whatever malaria medicine you’re prescribed BEFORE taking it (cough, larium, cough).
Our flight had two layovers on the flight over. We departed from good ol’ ATL for the two hour, short leg of the trip, caught a connection in Newark, NJ, then a 7 hour flight to Paris, France (where we found some interesting souvenirs), and then after a 9 hour flight we arrived in the magnificent India. I’m not going to lie, this was a huge trip for me. I had always wanted to do a study abroad program during my undergraduate degree, but never got around to it. The fact that Cindy and I were able to specifically cater this program towards nutrition and have it fit in as part of our dietetic internship was amazing. We were lucky to find a great organization, India Study Abroad Center (ISAC) to arrange our time here in India between two different focuses. We will be in India for one month. The first two weeks of our trip we are studying at an Ashram about Ayurveda and how nutrition plays a part in this ancient practice. We will go into much more detail as the days go on about the specifics of Ayurveda and what exactly we are learning. These two weeks are helping us to become more familiar with the cooking methods used and foods eaten in India. The last two weeks of our program, we will visit local peoples’ homes and assess whether or not they are receiving proper nutrition.
We left Atlanta at 3:10pm and arrived in India 2:30pm the next day (U.S. time). What got me through it personally were the eye masks and earplugs provided by the international flights. Not a better way to block out the world and the fact that your butt is so numb from sitting for the last 18 hours that you feel like you may never sit again. The airplane food was ehhhhh, but we know we’re going to get to eat some great food while we are here!
